After van Gogh had his ear cut off, he stayed at the psychiatric center at Saint-Paul de Mausole Abbey in France, sketching “The Starry Night” from his room through bars and painting in his studio in 1889. The work symbolises freedom as a dream to be free of thought, not locked behind bars, but not in dreams either. The visual resemblance to the original work transforms van Gogh's trees into a dream castle, with a village of free citizens enjoying the spectacle of stars in the sky in the background.
